A stone manor and its threshing barn, restored and drawn together around a new garden court.

The house had been altered badly twice in the last century. We took it back to its proper bones, rebuilt the barn as a kitchen and long gallery, and laid a walled court between the two. New work sits quiet beside old: flint walling, lime plaster, lead roofs dressed by hand.

A Georgian townhouse returned to its proper proportions, with a stair hall rebuilt in oak and lime plaster.

Six storeys, every one of them sagging. We re-levelled the floors on new steel hidden within the old joists, reinstated the lost cornices from a surviving fragment, and rebuilt the stair as the house's centrepiece. The brasswork was cast to our patterns and left to age.

Planning asked for near-invisibility. The house folds into the slope: bedrooms below, living rooms above, looking straight into the canopy. A brick loggia anchors the garden front. Air-tight, ground-sourced, timber-framed; old materials over a thoroughly modern chassis.

Nothing behind the facade was worth keeping, so nearly nothing was kept. A new concrete frame, a basement dug by hand, and a stair of folded steel and white resin that carries daylight down three floors. From the street, only the door furniture gives it away.

An Arts and Crafts house opened carefully to its garden, with a dining room that borrows the whole terrace.

The clients are gardeners first and owners second. We kept the house's irregular charm, repaired rather than replaced its joinery, and added a low brick extension that steps down with the lawn. The blossom tree by the gate was protected through every delivery.
